Elizabeth Bishop was a poet whose precision was marveled by her contemporaries and today. Objective coolness were her signature style despite her tumultuous personal life.

A heart which ached for home, Bishop had many beautiful properties in her lifetime.

Elizabeth Bishop wrote a short essay about her procurement of this painting and the eventual death of Valedes in Key West in her piece titled Gregario Valdes, 1879 - 1939.
